Fort Sanders Health and Fitness Center is continuing our internal inquiry related to a recent incident between two members of our facility.

We have asked Dr. Vinit Sharma to meet in person for further discussion as a follow-up to our initial meeting with him. We have also talked directly with the other member involved and we have interviewed several witnesses.

As we work to conclude our investigation, maintaining a welcoming environment for all our patrons, guests and team members remains our top priority.

This post is not meant to diminish this accusation or judge the accused, in this case. Certainly, I welcome Dr. Sharma as a fellow member, and I look forward to seeing him around the club. Dr. Sharma, I hope this issue gets worked out, and I get a chance to meet you at Fort Sanders Health and Fitness Center(FSHFC). I started as a member of FSHFC in 1996. Some days, especially in cold or wet weather, me and my son(Colby) are at FSHFC two times a day - once during the daytime and once at night. I don't recall seeing anything remotely like this issue at FSHFC. Certainly, I am not saying it did not happen, but it's totally not the character of the club. In fact, in all my years and experience at FSHFC, it would be an anomaly. FSHFC, for years, has been very accepting of Colby(whom has a ''special needs spectrum" diagnosis, and that same level of acceptance has not always existed with other places, Colby has been. Tommy Hodge and the other FSHFC staff have been nothing but first-class with me and Colby. We are very fortunate to have a first-class facility that is Fort Sanders Health and Fitness Center - a lot of excellent people there.

Or perhaps ALL of you should wait for ALL the facts instead of jumping to conclusions.

Fort Sanders management have you issued a statement directly to your members via email or through handouts or notices posted in and around the facility? Just posting a statement on your Facebook page is not nearly enough to address this issue.

I know the story. Can totally picture some members of management being unfriendly and rude. Good thing the guy did not let it go.

I just started there and have never felt unsafe. I am glad that the center will continually Ensure that me and other members feel safe and at home when working out there. Thank you,

A reminder. Just because you are white and haven’t seen racism does NOT mean it hasn’t happened there. Some of these comments are clearly from a place of privilege. I’ve had great experiences at Fort Sanders and horrible experiences (which I’m sure have had to do with me being a black woman). But no one gets to negate an experience simply because they’re lucky enough to not have had those experiences.

The individual that exhibited this behavior should be dropped as a member. THAT would send the only appropriate message.

It is about time corporate steps in and shakes up management at this facility! I have personally experienced poor management and treatment of its employees (my daughter) at this Health Club! Some behind the scene stories would disgust people. The slow and unprofessional response to deal with this particular hate issue is not surprising!

"Fort Sanders Health and Fitness Center strives to provide a safe, inclusive and positive environment for those who use our facilities and services, and we work to maintain a welcoming space for all patrons and guests." When you talk about a dispute between two members, you might as well say "on both sides." Also, you have an employee that is not living up to your opening statement if they dissed the complaining member with "we have 11,000 nembers." You should strive a little bit more, and not equivocate.

The member that threatened one of your other members MUST be banned from the facility. No one with that much hate belongs in a fitness center that is striving to create a positive environment.

The fact that they said "we have 11000 members" as if losing one is nothing is not business savvy.

This incident is awful. I am a long time member who was about to bring in a new member. She and I will ask some questions first. I am wondering if at the moment, FSHF cannot legally make a statement about dismissing a member. They have said there is an internal investigation going on. There were witnesses apparently to the incident but probably not witnesses to what the manager said...Im thinking there are probably lawyers involved and all sorts of behind the scenes stuff going on right now. Covenant Health is a big entity, not likely to move quickly. I'm glad this has gone public. I think there are probably some personnel issues that should be explained also, not just in this incident.

I hope the internal inquiry includes the staff member’s response. What was the purpose of saying “we have 11,000 members” other than to make one member feel like his voice is not important.

Who ever said those vile things in the locker room should have his membership terminated. I am not defending this person in any way. But, Ft Sanders provides free lockers, with locks to keep your personal items safe. Short of a water bottle, towel and your phone, you really don't need anything else in the workout areas. If you feel the need to haul a bag around, then set it out of the way. Certainly don't set your stuff on a bench someone else is already using. Etiquette is key to everyone enjoying their workout. We are all adults, and should be able to politely ask for a another member to move their things without racist verbal abuse.

Well, good on you for investigating, which is a step. So do you plan on publishing the results of the internal inquiry? I think this is a necessary step in reassuring current and potential members that, even if management made a grievous error in judgment, you can be trusted to take allegations of issues seriously.

I hope you do the right thing depending on the outcome of your inquiry. Please keep members informed.

"We have launched an internal inquiry regarding the report of a recent incident involving two members at our facility." I strongly recommend that you provide a deadline by which you will share the findings of your report, any actions taken in the short term, and any changes that will be put in place in the long term. It really shouldn't take more than a week to do, if it is done well.

Nice, but It seems it took a petition with thousands of signature and FB shares and news coverage before you thought the issue serious enough to address. Also, you failed to include religion in your diversity statement. Is the manager that thought better to get rid of the victim of the attack instead of addressing the actual problem also fired?

I just called FSHFC what they are doing with the membership of the member who was the aggressor. I was told they are not allowed to talk about it, but their PR will contact me soon. As a longtime member I hope they do the right thing and take his membership. For many of us the gym is a haven, a place we go for physical and emotional well being and if we don’t feel the management is willing to protect their members, how safe are we when we are there?

What a breath of fresh air seeing people stand up for what is right against racism and when we are united for the truth then people and organizations are left with no choice but to take notice and do the RIGHT thing 🙂

Consider adding "sexual orientation" to your list of protected classes. If your management is not willing to advocate for EVERY potential member and their safety, then it is a failure to all your members.

I see you (the gym) stating you don't participate in discrimination, but you are extremely quiet on how you will deal with members who do. The latter is as important as the former - if not more.

What matters is NOT what you say in a statement BUT what you do on this issue. Unless there is specific action that prevents this kind of misdeed and ensures our and our kids’ safety, the problem will go on

I love working out here. The staff and management is always friendly and willing to help.

Wish Gold’s Gym felt that way.

“Launch an investigation”? Might as well “form a committee”. Health clubs should have a written policy that harassing behavior towards other members will cause you to have your membership terminated, with no refund. Everyone should demand this in their membership agreements Or offer to take your business elsewhere

It's time to RENEW your fitness Journey!

RENEW Small Group Training consists of both conditioning and strength training in a 30 minute low impact circuit workout. The groups usually consist of 3-5 people. Fort Sanders Health & Fitness Center

Fort Sanders is an amazing fitness center. They have a lot of nice, old school equipment and free weights. Besides the actual gym, they have everything you would want in a complete fitness center - pool (indoor and outdoor), racquetball, basketball, tennis (indoor and outdoor), miniature track (which hurts one of your thighs), and sauna and steam room. The employees are kind and helpful. I also enjoy their UT score prediction game during the college football season. Overall it is a great gym for someone who wants everything a fitness center can offer.
I love everything about Fort Sanders Health & Fitness Center. The facility is A+ with the equipment, space, amenities and options that include indoor/outdoor pool and tennis court along with a basketball court and racquetball courts. The staff is top-notch, and personally, the childcare (which is included with the family membership) makes it possible for my wife and me to make it to the gym with two young kids at home. I also recommend taking advantage of the group classes that are included in your membership.
I've been a member for only 2-3 weeks and have never joined a gym before so I didn't know what to expect. I love it at Fort Sanders! The facility is amazing, the staff is super helpful and friendly and it is easy to get to from my home in West Knox. Just a short drive down the Pellissippi. I swim for exercise in the indoor pool but there is a heated outdoor pool that stays open until the end of November. The life guard is very friendly and knowledgeable and he works hard at maintaining the pools. The locker room is great! Clean and stocked with essentials such as shampoo, hair dryers, etc. I'm thrilled to be a member here and recommend this place highly.
Love the variety of classes and rotation of teachers. Favorite classes are Barre with Linda G, pound with Allyson or Kristi and aqua fitness with Kristi, Katie. Or Dani. Thank you Fort Sanders for making fitness fun!
Thank you for a great fitness assessment. Marshall was very professional and provided a lot of good information for my consideration. I left the assessment feeling very positive about the next step in building a more healthy lifestyle. Thank you!
